Yam has worked with many famous zhengyin huadan and her renowned work included "Tale of the Purple Hairpin", "Princess Chang Ping" and "Dream in Peony Pavilion". During the Japanese occupation, Yam formed "Sun Sing Opera Troupe" in Macau with a number of Cantonese opera artists including Pak Suet Sin, Lan Chi Pak, and Au-yeung Kim. Later, she joined "Qun Fang Yan Ying Opera Troupe", an all-female opera troupe.
She learnt Cantonese opera with her aunt when she was young and then she continued her studies with Wong Lui Hap who was notable for being the female version of Ma Si Tsang.The look of Cantonese opera of Yam Kim Fai (sheng) and Pak Suet Sin (dan).
